Usually anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour (or more for specialty/quick lube where they rotate tires). An oil change is a relatively easy thing to do. You simply follow the process below:
-Release the drain plug with a wrench and allow the old, dirty oil to drip out of your engine.
-Install the new drain plug by hand.
-Remove the oil filter using pliers, and install the new one by hand. The type of oil filter may vary based on your vehicle model. You can purchase filters at any auto parts store (AutoZone, O’Reilly Auto Parts, etc.). I recommend buying a few extra; if you get a bad one, try to return it or exchange it.
-Fill your engine with the appropriate amount of new oil, using an oil funnel if necessary.
-Remove the old “funnel cap” from your filter canister and install the new “funnel cap”. Make sure not to spill any lubricant on painted surfaces.
-Reconnect the oil cap and rotate the vehicle to let it begin flowing. You can hear how much your engine is draining as you drain it (when it’s full, there’s a specific sound).
-Check for leaks by starting the car and using a paper towel to see if any drops of liquid appear under your car. If you don’t notice any leaks, then you’re good to go!
An oil change takes approximately 1 hour. The actual time for draining the oil depends on how much dirt is in it and how long you allow the engine to drain. It’s important not to let it sit after you remove the plug because all that gunk will just sit there and clog the drain plug.
If you get your oil changed at an actual service center (i.e., Jiffy Lube, Firestone, etc.), it will take anywhere between 30 minutes to 1 hour. They do this all day long, so they know how to do it quickly while still ensuring quality work. If you do it yourself (DIY), expect the process to take 1-2 hours.
The type of oil filter you use will affect how long does an oil change take, as well. If you have a high capacity oil filter that can hold more dirt, then your oil change will be faster because the new dirty oil doesn’t have to wait for the old oil to drain out.
